Porcelain Carving with Kyle Guymon - Sat & Sun, Feb 7 & 8

Porcelain Carving with Kyle Guymon

Saturday Feb 7, 2-4 pm

Sunday Feb 8, 9-11 am

Skill Level & Prerequisites

  • This workshop is intended for intermediate to advanced students.

  • Students must have basic pottery throwing skills and be able to proficiently throw simple forms such as mugs and bowls.

  • This is not a beginner-level wheel class.

  • Ages 16+

Join us for a two-day immersive porcelain workshop with guest artist Kyle Guymon, focusing on both surface and form-based techniques for expressive ceramic work. This workshop is designed for potters who already have a foundation in wheel throwing and are ready to expand their skills through advanced decorative and altering methods.

Day One will focus on wheel throwing and surface development. Kyle will demonstrate porcelain throwing techniques followed by a range of surface decoration methods, including image transfer, line carving, inlay and Mishima, and Sgraffito. Students will have time during class to practice these techniques and ask questions, as well as additional time after demonstrations to continue working independently.

Day Two will explore more sculptural approaches to porcelain. Kyle will demonstrate high-relief carving and push-out techniques to alter and expand thrown forms, emphasizing depth, movement, and narrative surface. Students will again have dedicated time to practice during and after demonstrations.

Materials Required

Students must bring:

  • 4–6 leather-hard porcelain pieces (such as bowls, cylinders, or mugs) ready for carving and surface work

  • Porcelain clay suitable for throwing during the workshop

Clay may be brought into the studio for use during the class; however, outside clay may not be fired at our studio unless it is purchased from us.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from a skilled porcelain artist and deepen your understanding of both technical precision and expressive surface design.
