What to Expect in a Wheel Throwing Pottery Class
If you’ve ever watched a potter shaping clay on a spinning wheel and thought, “I want to try that,”—you’re not alone! Wheel throwing is one of our most popular art classes at Art Haus in Salt Lake City. Whether you're signing up solo or with a friend, our 4-week beginner pottery course is the perfect way to dive in and discover the joy of clay.
1. It’s Perfect for Beginners
Our monthly 4-week pottery classes are designed specifically for first-timers. You’ll get comfortable on the wheel and learn each step of the pottery-making process in a relaxed, supportive environment. No experience? No problem.
2. What You'll Learn
Over the course of four classes, you'll learn:
How to prep and wedge clay
Centering clay on the wheel
Throwing basic forms like bowls and cylinders
Trimming your pots to refine their shape
Glazing your finished work in your final class
By the end of the month, you’ll walk away with your own handmade ceramic pieces—and a whole new appreciation for the art of pottery.
3. What to Wear and Bring
Dress comfortably and expect to get messy
Bring a towel and wear clothes you don’t mind getting clay on
Tie back long hair and keep nails short (it makes throwing much easier)
We’ll provide the clay, tools, aprons, and everything else you’ll need.
4. The Art of Trimming & Glazing
Unlike many one-time pottery workshops where instructors finish your pieces for you, our 4-week series gives you hands-on experience with trimming and glazing. You’ll learn how to refine your pieces on the wheel after they dry, and in the final week, you’ll glaze your work using our studio’s wide range of colors and techniques.
It’s a deeply satisfying part of the process—and a big reason students come back again and again.
5. Meet the Art Haus Community
One of the best parts of our classes? The people. Our students come from all walks of life—some are looking for a creative outlet, others want to try something new, and many just want a few hours a week to unwind and connect.
You’ll be part of a warm, inclusive, and supportive community. Many of our students become regulars, friends, or even creative collaborators. We believe that learning is better when it’s shared, and we’re proud of the welcoming, down-to-earth vibe in every class.
6. The Pottery Class Experience Is Meditative and Fun
Wheel throwing is equal parts creative and calming. The focus it requires, the feel of the clay, and the rhythm of the spinning wheel all add up to something special—it’s no wonder so many people describe pottery as therapeutic.
Ready to Get Your Hands Dirty? If you're curious about clay, our monthly 4-week wheel throwing classes are the perfect way to explore the medium in a hands-on, encouraging environment. Whether you leave with a mug, a bowl, or something delightfully wonky, we promise you’ll leave proud—and probably a little addicted.
