Exploring Cyanotype on Clay with Guest Artist Sarah May

Artist Sarah May Cyanotype

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a hands-on workshop with guest artist Sarah May, who introduced us to the magical world of cyanotype photography — one of the oldest photographic printing processes. Sarah, whose work you can explore at sarahlizmay.com, guided us through the steps of creating beautiful, blue-toned prints using light-sensitive solutions and natural materials.

After learning about the history and chemistry behind the cyanotype process, we experimented with printing directly onto clay surfaces. Using plants and natural objects we collected from around Salt Lake City, each participant created their own unique design. Once exposed to sunlight and rinsed, the images revealed stunning, ethereal patterns in deep shades of indigo — a perfect blend of art, science, and nature.

To finish off the session, we assembled our printed cyanotype clay tiles into hanging mobiles, creating pieces that now catch the light beautifully as they moves. It was an inspiring afternoon of creativity and exploration, and we’re so grateful to Sarah for sharing her expertise and enthusiasm with us. Participants left not only with their one-of-a-kind cyanotype clay mobiles but also with a new appreciation for this fascinating photographic technique.

We can’t wait to welcome Sarah back in the future and to continue experimenting with alternative printing methods in our studio!
