At Art Haus, we love experimenting with new pottery techniques - and this month, we tried something completely new to us: our very first Obvara pottery firing! The results turned out amazing, and we can’t wait to share them with our community here in Salt Lake City.
What is Obvara Pottery?
Obvara is an ancient Eastern European pottery firing technique that dates back to the 12th century. After the pottery is heated in the kiln, it’s dipped into a special fermented flour mixture and then cooled in water. The process leaves behind dramatic, organic surface patterns - swirls of earthy browns, soft blacks, and golden tones. Every Obvara piece is completely unique!
Our First Results
Since this was our first Obvara firing, we weren’t sure what to expect. But the pieces came out beautifully - full of texture, character, and one-of-a-kind patterns. It was such a rewarding experience to see the transformation happen so quickly and so vividly.
What’s Next at Art Haus
This first firing has us inspired. We’re already planning to bring Obvara pottery workshops to Salt Lake City so that our students, members, and community can try this exciting technique for themselves. Whether you’re new to pottery or an experienced ceramic artist, Obvara is a fun and unpredictable way to explore the beauty of clay.

At Art Haus, our mission is to build community through creativity. From pottery classes and workshops to painting, drawing, and kids’ after-school art programs, we’re always looking for new ways to bring people together through art.
