An Unforgettable Weekend with a Chinese Master Potter - Shaolin Zhan - Pottery Workshop

Last week, our studio had the immense honor of hosting one of China's top three master potters for a two-day workshop as part of NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts). It was an experience none of us will soon forget.

With just 11 lucky participants, the workshop offered an intimate and inspiring opportunity to learn directly from a true master of traditional Chinese pottery. Over the course of two days, we were guided through the art of throwing large forms and throwing off the hump—techniques that have been passed down for generations in China. Watching him work with such precision, grace, and ease was mesmerizing.

Each demonstration was not only technically impressive but deeply rooted in a rich cultural heritage. The master potter’s ability to center massive amounts of clay and bring elegant shapes to life was nothing short of magical. He generously shared his wisdom, answered questions with patience, and encouraged us all to push our boundaries on the wheel.

As part of his visit, he also created several pieces for our studio to keep—beautiful forms that now hold a special place in our hearts and on our shelves. One of the most meaningful pieces he made was a kiln God, carefully sculpted and placed above our glaze kiln to watch over our firings and bring good fortune to our future work.

The energy in the studio was electric—full of laughter, concentration, clay-splattered aprons, and a deep appreciation for this rare opportunity. We are so grateful for the chance to learn from such an esteemed artist, and for the connections made through clay, across cultures and continents.

To everyone who joined us—thank you for being part of this special moment in our studio’s history. And to our visiting master—thank you for your generosity, your artistry, and your inspiration. We’ll carry these lessons with us for years to come.
